Quaysiders is close to many rivers and lakes which are popular with canoeists. Lake Windermere is right next to our accommodation, and there is a public launching area right across the road from our door. Windermere is popular for those using Canadian canoes as well as kayaks.

The river Brathay is joins Lake Windermere very close to our accommodation and is a popular river for canoeing. This river can be descended from Elterwater village, a distance of about 4 kilometers, however there is a dangerous waterfall, Skelwith Force on the way. This has been the scene of fatal canoeing accidents, so this should be avoided. There are grade 3 sections in this river, and the lower section between Skelwith and Lake Windermere is very popular.

At the other end of Lake Windermere, the river Leven is the outflow from the Lake, and is considered to be a grade 3 river.

For those inexperienced in canoeing or kayaking, there are centres that offer instruction and hire of Canadian canoes, etc, for example the Coniston Boating Centre, which also hires other forms of boats on Coniston.

The Lake District rivers are used for a variety of other recreational pursuits such as angling, so canoeists should take care to be fully informed about access issues. Most of the Lakes are open for quiet recreational use. Canoeists will find information from local canoe clubs and a useful link is the British Canoe Union: http://www.bcu.org.uk/
