Windermere is a mecca for dinghy sailors as well as the owners of larger sailing craft. Quaysiders offers a superb base for a boating holiday, being literally right across the road from the public slipway at Waterhead.
Experienced dinghy sailors will be right at home here, England's
largest lake is a very popular venue for dinghy sailing with several
classes of Dinghy racing taking place right through the summer season.
Among the dinghy classes racing regularly on Windermere are GP14, RS400
and Lasers.
Windermere is also the home of its own class of racing yacht, the
Windermere class or "17 footer" as they are known locally. These are
among the oldest restricted classes in England that are still racing,
and celebrated their centenery in 2005. Some of the boats built in the
1930's are still racing today.
Of course, it's not necessary to race to enjoy boating in the Lakes.
Rowing boats are available to hire from the beach at Waterhead, and
motor boats offer cruises to Bowness and back. The 'Steamers' are
larger boats offering cruises as far as Lakeside, there are four of
these, the "Swan", "Teal", "Swift" and "Tern".
